At Bellacor, we are fortunate to partner with industry professionals who provide us and our customers with real-life looks at how they bring their clients’ visions to life. We see these products every day—from Bellacor lighting fixtures to home decor and furniture—but we have yet to see two people use their Bellacor purchases in the same way.
Today’s designer spotlight is from Jamie and Morgan Molitor, a husband-and-wife team that specializes in a full suite of interior residential remodeling services including design, style and building. Their lifestyle brand construction2style began as a DIY blog back in 2012, but has progressively evolved into a well-known name throughout the remodeling and interior design industry. This is their story:
A Brief Introduction
Hello, I’m Morgan Molitor from construction2style and I’m so excited to share with you how we got started as a business in the design + build industry.
Alongside my husband Jamie, we own construction2style, a Minnesota-based interior residential remodeling company with nationwide reach. Construction2style originally started off as a DIY blog back in 2012 when Jamie bought his first investment property to renovate to sell.
Where We Come From
I’ve always been a creative at heart and have dabbled in a lot of different industries. I was raised working alongside my parents at their restaurant in the small town of Roseau, MN. I also grew up working alongside a dad and grandpa who were both incredible carpenters. I later went to school for fashion merchandising in Long Beach, CA with a dream of working as interior stylist for a big home brand. After six years of working in Los Angeles in the fashion district, I moved to Minneapolis and worked for a merchandising company and eventually transitioned to a digital marketing agency. Meanwhile, I also had a part-time serving job.
Through all of these experiences, I’ve learned the value of hard work, that I love getting my hands dirty, customer service is key, and creativity and carpentry are gifts.
Jamie, on the other hand, had always wanted to be a builder and went to school for carpentry. But when he graduated, it was during the recession and since there were no jobs out there, he focused on doing a few investment properties instead.
Boy Meets Girl
It was a dream a come true in more ways than one when I locked eyes with Jamie in a bar after I moved back to Minneapolis. When I met Jamie back in 2011, he was just about to buy his first investment property to renovate to sell. I’ll never forget the day when we pulled up in front of this house. I thought he was playing a joke on me! It was a foreclosure and at the time, I had no idea the level of talent and skill that he carried.
But it was no joke. It was real life and little did I know, he was about to change our lives forever.
The journey that started so long ago has led to today. Never would I have dreamed that I would be living this life; working alongside my husband, helping him paint and tile, designing homes for clients, doing two to four brand collaborations per month, writing tutorials non-stop for our blog, managing a team of our own — all while trying to raise two crazy little dudes into good human beings.
Isn’t it crazy how life can come full circle sometimes?
I started watching him slowly renovate this home and was completely blown away by his talents. At that time, I was in the middle of transitioning from my corporate merchandising job to a digital marketing agency, so the digital world was all very new and fascinating to me. After seeing what Jamie was doing, I asked him if I could start a blog to document his talents. Probably not knowing what a blog was (nor did I so much), he was on board. We came up with the very clever name construction2style. He provides the construction, there are two of us, and I do the styling.
Shortly after we got married, we ramped up this blog thing, and started getting calls from locals to build furniture. That evolved into finishing their basements, and eventually remodeling their entire homes. Jamie got his contractors license a little quicker than he had planned, and we made the jump to do interior residential remodeling full time.
In 2016, we scaled from being solely a husband-and-wife team into a full-design, build and styling crew; we even hired two employees. Fast forward to present day, construction2style has evolved from a design + build team into a small media company with a handful of other resources available on our site. However, we still have one common goal: to serve people within the home improvement industry, whether they want to learn to DIY with our tutorials, attend one of our in-house workshops, take one of our online courses or hire our team to do it
We’re currently renovating our third home while documenting the journey and providing as many tutorials as we can on our website. We also share our client work for inspiration and try to be an open book as much as our clients allow.
For fun, I thought I’d share some of our favorite before-and after-photos of projects that also incorporate some of our favorite Bellacor items.
We remodeled the dining room in our own home which was originally a living room. We turned it into a dining room using Bellacor’s vintage gold pendant, gray metal dining chairs, and our favorite woven baskets that we use for planter pots. You can find the full product list of all of our finishing selections here on our blog post about our dining room.
Bellacor is our go-to for our lighting. And every client always has a hard time narrowing it down to just one. In our West Bloomington project we did last year, we got to choose a few, which was exciting! Our client was up for mixing metals and the combination of these three lights were fun to play around with. I was excited to not have to just choose one.
And lastly, one of our favorite bathroom projects that we did for a client in Eden Prairie where we incorporated clear glass wall sconces from Bellacor. Another great project with fun clients where we got to provide tutorials along the way, like how to DIY this shiplap wall in collaboration with HANDy Paint.
Hope you enjoyed our story and got a dose of inspiration from it! It’s fun to think where life will lead you sometimes from opportunities you get or people that you encounter in life. I’m a firm believer that every moment matters and will impact your life in someway, including this one. Thank you for reading! – Morgan
