Ceramic Decorative Accessories

Inspired by African headrests, this clay urn is handmade by a group of Abaluhya artisans working from a mud hut workshop just outside Nairobi, Kenya. Headrests are important cultural icons in many parts of Africa, especially Ethiopia. Not only do they serve a utilitarian function by keeping the owner‘s elaborate hairdo off the floor and away from dirt and insects, but they also play an integral role in some nuptial ceremonies. In some cultures, headrests are believed to assist the owner reach subconscious states where communication with ancestors and spirits is possible.
