• In the tradition of santo carving, a style preserved as a folk art in northern New Mexico, the Penelope Collection represents three figures in the story of St. Irene. This carving represents Penelope, baptized as Irene (which means ôpeaceö) who lived in the fourth century. Penelope, daughter of a pagan king, was heavily persecuted during her lifetimeyet devoted herself to the Christian god and performed many miracles which elevated her to sainthood. St. Irene was one of the twelve virgins who appeared to St. Seraphim of Sarov and the Diveyevo nun Eupraxia on the Feast of the Annunciation in 1831.
