Window Treatments & Window PanelsWindow Treatments & Window Panels

Are your windows bare or treated in a style that’s dated or not your taste? Such a shame for a critical room element you live with each day! It's time to elevate your windows to their fullest aesthetic potential with a combination of drapery and hardware that reflects your personality and design theme. Window curtains are necessary to draw attention to specific areas of a room, capture natural light, create privacy, and complement important attributes of the space. When shopping for curtains and drapes, consider the number of windows to cover, their size, and how much light you wish to preserve or block out. From top to bottom, let's consider size, transparency, materials and style to find the window treatments of your dreams!

Curtains and Drapes

Let's start at the beginning – size! Once you’re ready to select curtains and drapes, measure and record both the length and width of the area to cover. The size of both the drapes and the windows will drive your design options, so decide where you’ll be installing the rods and measure from that point downward. In many cases, window drapes are hung a few inches above the frame molding. If the windows are large and stately, you might want coverings to fall all the way to the floor. For smaller windows, curtains might instead end at the sill. In a living room or bedroom with tall windows, try 95 inch curtains that sweep the sides of the frame and skim the floor.

For another inch of drama, hang 96 inch curtains six inches over the window and allow the extra material to puddle at the hems. This look is especially pretty in rooms with hardwood floors. To achieve the grand, glamorous look of pulled-back drapes, you might also go with 108 inch curtains that cross over the panes and fall to the floor in luxurious pleats. Try this look in a dining room or in an area where you need more privacy, drawing the drapes back in at day and releasing them to hang freely at night.

Window Curtains

So much more than just window treatments
The window drapes, hardware, furniture, and architectural features you place in a room help determine its theme and style. Most designers choose between transitional, traditional, solid or contemporary looks. A transitional style of window drapery allows you to adjust the amount of light with pullbacks and other hardware. Try a few sheer window treatments behind opaque drapes in order to enjoy a sunny, airy feeling in daytime, while preserving nighttime privacy. For windows that bring in too much light and heat, a set of wide curtains can create shade by blocking an extra few inches of glass as well.

For a traditional style, consider window curtains and drapes printed or woven with patterns that speak to the room’s decor. A pair of drapes in a subtle floral print draws attention without overpowering other items of interest in the area. If your furniture or wallpaper is patterned, a set of solid drapes in a bold color like dark teal or red can become a stunning backdrop for lamps, sculptures, or houseplants. You can also use drapes to modernize a room by choosing contemporary geometric prints, tweed textures, or bright colors that complement a sleek dining set or mid-century sofa and coffee table.

Silk Curtains and Faux Dupioni Silk Curtains

Sleek and chic window treatments
Silk is one the most prestigious of all fabrics. There’s no doubt that the shimmer and vibrant shades of the world’s most precious fiber make a room look chic and elegant. Finding a pair of silk drapes you love is easy, but the slightly higher cost might keep you from clicking the “buy” button. If so, look instead to the wide range of styles and colors of faux silk drapes. Thanks to modern manufacturing technology, synthetic silk fibers look and feel almost like the real thing but are more affordable and easier to clean.

Just as with real silk curtains, you’ll enjoy the nubby texture, crisp pleats, and luxurious sheen that so perfectly complements a crystal chandelier, oak bookcase, or a collection of artisan glassware. Put your creativity to work and explore the possibilities: A pair of faux silk taffeta curtains with ruffles at the bottom can lend a sense of 19th-century France or deep Southern charm, depending on how you hang and style them. A pair of unlined faux silk drapes can create a breathtaking watercolor effect, but lined drapes in a bedroom might better help block light for better sleeping. Check the care label for instructions to prevent fading and shrinking, and enjoy your new drapes.

Panel Curtains

Panel curtains are a perfect solution for rooms with many windows or irregular sizes, but even the smallest room with a single window will benefit from a design treatment of window panels. Keeping your style goals in mind, shop for panels in the length, width, color, and texture to best complement the room’s features and furnishings. Consider cotton twill panels in rainbow ombre for a child’s bedroom, a trendy indigo scroll pattern for a boho kitchen, or a set of lacy sheers for a shabby chic sunporch. A pair of taffeta draper panels in dark blue or green makes a dining room look regal, especially with elegant gold or brass pullbacks and rods.

Create drama by hanging a set of faux silk curtain panels with ruffles or tight top gathering and enjoy the billows of light falling through on sunny mornings and afternoons. Or warm up a cool room with panels and read a book in your newly designed space. Panel sets offer an array of possibilities – try layering them with Roman shades on a window or secured at both ends over French doors. Or, of course, you can always add flair to a tall, narrow window with a single solid or patterned panel tied back with a silk ribbon or a bit of tapestry trim. The options are limited only by your imagination!

Window Drapes & More

Let's part with a few best practices to keep your window treatments in tip-top shape. First, make sure to check the fabric care instructions before washing, steaming, or ironing your drapes. Hang hardware with the right tools (drills and stepladders are usually required) and remember, there’s nothing wrong with asking for help. An extra pair of hands to help you level curtain rods means you’re happy with the final result every time you enter the room!
