Choosing the right drum pendant lighting for your unique style
Traditional drum lighting fixtures consist of a light hanging on a chain or a stem with a drum shaped shade; sometimes considered drum shade chandeliers. Lighting designers have expanded on the traditional fixture to build creative designs that fit any style. Contemporary and modern inspired designs include sculptural elements above and below the shade as well as reinterpretations of the shade itself. Industrial designed drum pendants will feature a lot less ornamentation, and often celebrate the structural components of the fixture itself; leaving just the frame of the shade is one example. Each drum is an opportunity to play up the look of your space while incorporating ambient lighting to set the tone of your home.
Drum Shade Chandelier Tips
Close your eyes and imagine a typical drum light – and then replace that image with unique fixtures made with modern-day medleys that boast ornate drum chandelier shades of countless varieties. Now you're talking! Decorate your home with the undeniable magic of exquisite crystal accents and clear glass drops, or brighten a neutral room with a matte gold drum shade that literally shimmers and shines. From the magnificence of a large drum shade chandelier to rustic birdcage lanterns with weathered finishes, these decorative drum light fixtures add instant style to any space.
Drum Shade Pendant Shapes
Incredibly versatile and big on modern sensibilities, drum pendant lighting is the perfect complement to any space – particularly kitchens and dining rooms. Update your dining room table with a series of matching kitchen pendants, or brighten your countertop workspace with dome drum pendant lighting that offers soft light and metallic details. Hang a lantern drum shade pendant over a kitchen island for illuminated cooking prep, or use bowl drum pendants for visual appeal and abundant light when and where you need it. From combinations of mini pendants to dynamic kitchen show-stoppers, there are countless ways to illuminate your space with a one-of-a-kind style.
An even closer look at drum pendant types and shapes
A classic shape for a decorative fixture, the drum pendant light is visually interesting and creates beautiful ambient lighting in your room. There are many variations on this shape including island, dome, lantern, bowl, globe, linear, and starburst. An island drum pendant is a single shade on a fixture. A dome shaped drum has a curved top to the drum, giving it a dome-like shape that creates a downlighting effect. Introducing different design elements, a lantern style drum often removes the shade itself and has a more structural and lantern-like frame around the fixture. Better yet, a white drum pendant light with a lantern shape is sensible for most aesthetics. Yet another option, a bowl shaped pendant has a convex element to the drum that creates an uplighting effect. A globe, on the other hand, can feature a surrounding element, often with metal straps creating the shape. Adding more variety to the mix, a linear drum pendant commonly has multiple lamps on a single chain or stem. Finishing things off, a starburst will have a star-like frame around the fixture or metallic elements that provide a celestial feel.
Drum Light Fixtures for Every Look
Command attention in any room with drum light fixtures that go above and beyond to suit your personal sense of style. Give your home a beachy look and feel with a wraparound iron frame drum pendant inspired by the coast, or reimagine fine dining with a large overhead drum pendant with intricate metalwork, suspended crystal accents, and a modern linen shade. Adore rustic lighting? Hang an antiqued burlap drum shade for subtle texture, or go for contemporary with two-tone drums that pair classic black with glimmering gold. Drum lighting fixtures lend sleek profiles, rustic charm, or sophisticated appeal to any space as you please.
Choosing the right size drum pendant for your space
Choosing the right sized drum pendant is quite similar to picking a chandelier. A great rule to follow is finding the size of your room (length and width), adding those two numbers together and then reducing them proportionally down into inches. In other words, if you have a room that is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide, you can add those numbers together (15 + 12 = 27 feet). Then you transpose that number (27 feet) down to inches (27 inches), and that gives you the maximum diameter for a drum pendant in a 15 by 12 foot room. As always, design choices come down to preference so some may go much larger or smaller but if you are unsure, this is a good rule to follow to keep proportions in mind.
