If you want to add drama and impact to your home without the cost or look of a chandelier, pendant lighting can change the look of your room instantly. Extremely versatile in style, shape and expenditure, pendant lights are suitable for just about any room—though they are most commonly installed in the entryway, kitchen or living room.

A Pendant Light is Not a Chandelier

These hanging light fixtures are often confused with chandeliers and though both lighting fixtures hang from the ceiling, they are quite different. For one, pendant lights hang singularly with one light off of a chain and chandeliers have multiple branches that hold multiple lights. Pendant lighting is can create a more modern look to your home and offers a money-saving alternative to chandeliers both in purchase price and in installation costs.

Different Types of Pendant Lights

The most common types of pendant lighting include bowl, dome and drum, but the design, finish and shape of each type vary considerably. Other types include lantern pendants, lantern pendants and linear pendants, all of which offer stunning options no matter your style.

How to Choose a Pendant Ceiling Light

There are several ways to go about shopping for pendant ceiling lights. You should start by assessing the room you'd like to install a light in and what sort of purpose the light will serve. Pendants are adaptable to many situations allowing them to be used for task, mood and general lighting. For example, if you're looking for kitchen pendant lighting, you likely need it for task lighting so you can see what you're cooking. Alternatively, if you're placing a light fixture in your bedroom, you may be using it for mood-setting or general lighting.

Generally, most people shop for a hanging light fixture based on the shape. Once you've determined the shape you want, you can filter your search by color, finish and even style. Pendant styles range from traditional to contemporary, industrial to rustic, and retro to Victorian. On our site, you can also search by bulb type, number of lights and price range so you are able to find the right fit for both your home and your budget.

From the foyer to the dining room, kitchen to the hall, pendants are one of the key components to all lighting plans. With a full-range of styles, sizes and prices, you can find the perfect pendant light at Bellacor. If you're still not sure what you're looking for or have more questions, we've made this complete buying guide for you; it has everything you need to know from type of pendant to what's currently trending!

FAQs
Q: How far apart should my pendant lights hang?

A: The space between a set of pendant lights will fully depend on the surface that you are using them to illuminate. If you are hanging a set of pendants over a long table or a kitchen island, you want to measure 12” from the length of the surface, and the resulting measurement is the space you have to hang multiple pendants. (A 42” table - 12” = 30” space to hang pendants).
Q: Do pendant lights come with adjustable heights?

A: Many pendants come with adjustable heights, if the pendant you are interested in hangs from a cord, chain, or cable it is most likely adjustable in the field. If it hangs from a stem, it is more likely not adjustable. Check the specifications and description of each pendant for installation details.
Q: Can I hang a pendant light on a pitched ceiling?

A: Absolutely, look for pendants with installation information that includes a kit for sloped ceilings. Alternatively, most pendants with a chain, cord, or cable use gravity to create a plumb hang to the pendant and can be installed on a slope. Check the description for details on individual pendants.
Q: What are unusual or unique places where I can hang pendant lights?

A: Pendants are great in entryways, especially in spaces with a higher ceiling height. Many people will hang them in powder rooms for a unique lighting fixture in an unexpected place. With the care and attention that people now pay to create bedrooms with good design, pendant lights are showing up over beds for added sparkle.

Still haven't received the 2 chandeliers.... I ordered them over a month ago

Kenwood Vintage Gold Five-Light Linear Pendant
We love our chandelier that sits above our rectangular table. In my search to stay on budget this was a fraction of the price of many I was looking at and compared very close in style!

Rittenhouse Bronze Six Light Chandelier
I was looking for something different; bronze (almost black) finish and off white (beige) shade. Perfect!!

Vintage Gold Five-Light Linear Pendant
We finally were able to install this fixture quite a while after purchase, and I was nervous because so much time has elapsed while waiting for our remodel to progress. But my husband (who is not an electrician but who is fairly handy) was able to install it in about 30 minutes and it looks great in our dining room! There are chains and also different rod sizes (for a more modern look) included for attaching the fixture to the ceiling plate. We opted for the rods (instead of chains) so the cord would be hidden. The rods came partially screwed together, so be sure to note if you use the rods and you have have low, 8ft ceilings like we have, the smallest rod section (about 6 inches) can be used if you unscrew the silver threaded bits from each end...the threads are not permanently screwed into the rods though it may look like they are. I installed 60w equivalent bulbs and these are QUITE bright in this fixture since there are no shades, so will either get 40w bulbs or will need to install a dimmer. My only complaint, which I also read in other reviews but ordered anyway, is that the fixture is not in fact as golden as it seems in the photo. It's definitely more of a silvery or brassy gold. I figured I'd just paint it a true brushed/antique gold, but some other fixtures plus our cabinet hardware turned out to be about the same tone so it just happened to work. If you're going for a warmer, non-silvery gold, this may not be the fixture for you unless you're willing to paint it.
