What is the material of the metal? Is it rust safe?

The product is made out of 1018 cold drawn steel, it will rust if exposed to moisture in its raw form. This fixture has several steps to complete the finish including a final clear coat which seals the material, this fixture does not have any bare metal. In an indoor "Damp" application such as a bathroom for which it is designed we have had no complaints of rusting. I am certain if it was used in a "Wet" location or outdoors it would rust.
