I find 60 watt bulbs presents a harsh light. Can I use a much lower watt bulb in this chandelier?

You can, but I found that small burlap bulb shades did the trick with keeping the downward and ambient light but reducing glare. I found that the lower watt bulbs were too dim in the room.
