Re the contemporary horizontal mailbox, what are the dimensions of the box itself not including the outside trim ( in other words what are the dimensions of the interior of the box ?)
The dimension of the mailbox approximately 15 Inch width x 8 Inch height x 5 Inc deep at the top, tapering to about 3 Inch at the bottom.

Can the 5" extensions be removed by design? (not by cutting off)
Yes. You actually wouldn't have to remove them at all. You just wouldn't install them. There are small holes, for the screws, that would be left unfilled. I don't think the holes would be that noticeable.
