Just because you’re working with less square footage, it doesn’t mean you can’t show off your style. Decorating a small space just requires a good eye for what works and what doesn’t.

Whether you’re shopping for new furniture, lighting, or tasteful décor, it’s important to measure your space and think about the overall aesthetic of the room. You don’t want to buy something just because you fell in love with it at first sight. Without careful planning, you could end up with décor that clashes or is too big for your space.

First, make sure you don’t overdo it with your decorative items. Less is more when it comes to curating a well put together room. Keep the amount of stuff you display to a minimum when you already don’t have much space to work with. You’ll also want to declutter any countertops or tables.

When it comes to furniture, leave enough open space in your home for easy mobility. Keep larger items like couches, shelves, or bookcases on the perimeter of rooms to help open up floor space. But don’t think you have to get rid of larger décor just because you have a small space. You just have to be strategic in where you place it. Put big items against the wall, not in the middle of the floor.

On that note, look for multipurpose or folding furniture. Desks, dining tables, and even beds come in styles that can easily be stored away to make more room. Once you’ve figured out the placement of your décor, it’s time to spruce it up with lighting fixtures. The right amount of lighting can work wonders in small spaces. Add lighting fixtures like lamps, string lights, wall sconces, or pendant lighting. These can bring warmth to your space, in addition to the natural light you already have coming from your windows.

A large, empty room can feel overwhelming and challenging to decorate. But it doesn’t have to be. It just means you have more room to play with. Keep in mind that the same basic design rules still apply regardless of the room size. A careless arranged large room can be just as off-putting as a poorly decorated small one.

First, make sure to match the scale of furniture to the scale of a room. For example, if your room is big but has low ceilings, place your décor low to create an appearance of height. If your room has high ceilings, do the opposite. Furnishings low to the ground will get lost in the space. Start off with measuring the length and width of each room you’re planning on decorating. Don’t forget to measure the height of your ceiling or any obstructions like stairs or columns. It’s also important to measure window openings and wall space if you’re shopping for curtains or drapes. The last thing you want is furniture that doesn’t fit in the doorway or tables that are too big or small for your space.

Next, it's important to arrange furniture to create individual spaces that bring the room together. For example, your living room may be separated into a reading nook or television-watching space. A good large home decorating tip is to use area rugs to help anchor the different furniture groupings visually.

All of the décor should work well together, regardless of how you plan to spend time in these individual spaces. But make sure that you don’t push all of your furniture against the walls. This will create an awkward, large space and cause you or your guests to yell across the room.

But just because you have an ample amount of space doesn’t mean that you should clutter it with tons of décor. Choose pieces that complement one another to enhance the overall aesthetic of your room. You can avoid cluttering by adding larger décor pieces like large-scale artwork, vases, or mirrors. If you have small décor items you can’t live without, arrange them in groups of threes. For example, three vases grouped together or three similar frames often look balanced.
