How does the glass release from the 3 holding hooks? Does one of the hooks have a spring loaded hinge that releases the glass?

Yes, the one that is spring-loaded, allowing it to be pulled out an inch or so to allow insertion of the shade (the other two arms are fixed); the spring-loaded arm would sag down about 3/16 of an inch under the weight of the shade.
