The height is designated as 40 inches. Can that height be shortened? Could we use less of the stem so that it hung only 24 inches or so from the ceiling?

Hello, Yes. There are 36" of stem for each side (2 - 6" and 2 - 12") included with it so it can be shortened. You must use at least 6" of stem. Thank you for your inquiry.
