I broke a few of the glass pieces and customer service was great! I got a prompt response and they were so easy to deal with. Very good quality and have never had a problem.

Could it be used without the shades?

Yes, the shades are removable, however, there isn't any recommendation from the Manufacture to use the Chandelier without the shades.
