in what directions does this extend? if it is mounted to the wall above a bedside table, can the arm be extended over the bed?

No, the arm does not move sideways. It moves up, down, or out from each joint

does this extend straight out from the wall (ie perpendicular to the wall) as well as to the right and left (ie parallel to the wall)? ie if on the same wall as the head of the bed, will it extend towards & over the bed from a bedside table?

The arm can only extend in a perpendicular direction out from the wall; it does not swing on either right or the left direction.

Hi, I recently asked the same question about a different sconce, but again, am wondering what the length of the stem is from the base of the sconce. We are working with a tight soffit area and are trying to make these work. Thanks!

The length of the stem from the base is 16 inches. Maximum Extension would be 33.75 inches and Minimum Extension would be 13 inches.

Would this fixture put off enough light to use as vanity lighting?

I have two of these sconces over a double sink vanity. They look super cool and there is sufficient light. It definitely isn't as much light as a regular vanity light, but it works great. I'm glad I got these lights for our remodel.

I know this has been answered but I still have doubts: I can clearly see the switch on the lamp's base. So if the lamp has no switch (as answered to question 2) then what is that small thing that looks like a push-in switch?

Apologies for the earlier answer. This light sconce comes with a Rotary Wallplate Switch and the light itself can be hardwired or not.
