I am looking to mount this on top of a stone pillar, does the post attachment come off/separate so the lantern can stand flat?
The four arms that come up from the post socket attach to the lamp by way of screws so I would think it would be possible. I'm not sure what would be required to reroute the electrical in a way that it would meet your local electrical codes.

Does it come with post?
No. It's designed to fit on a standard post.

Does the post the fixture sets on come with the fixture? If so, what is it made of and how does it fasten to the ground? The fixture it replaces has a heavy metal piece buried in the ground the post was fastened to. Would this also be included?
No, it doesn't come with the post. I just changed out the old fixture using the existing steel post. Also I painted my old post to match the fixture.
