Ideas & Advice

Refreshing your space with unique rugs creates visual appeal and comfort. By protecting your floors while also making a style statement, large area rugs bring warmth and a pop of color to a space. From distinctive and unique wool area rugs to small accent rugs with comfort and flair, the selection of Bellacor rugs is truly made for happy feet.

Popular Rug Materials and Types

Color is just one qualifier to consider during rug shopping. There are several rug types and styles to choose from and it's largely dependent on how you use it and where you place it. It's imperative that you carefully consider the traffic pattern of the room, the rug's construction, the rug's cleaning and maintenance requirements, the rug's texture and the general lifestyle of your family.

Rugs can be made from synthetic materials or natural materials. The most common rug materials include: wool, cotton, polyester, jute and polypropylene—though there are several others you can shop for. Wool rugs come at a higher price point, but for good reason: like a good wine, a wool rug gets even better with time. It's extremely resilient and naturally repels water making it a top choice for high-traffic areas and low-maintenance care. It's not uncommon for wool rugs to last for generations. Less expensive, cotton rugs are made of natural fibers and are durable and washable. Jute is similar to cotton rugs in terms of maintenance and durability. Polyester rugs are also easy to care for, inexpensive and durable.

Rug Shapes and Sizes

Once you've chosen your rug style and rug material, your next filter is to shop by size and shape. If you're trying to decide between large and small area rugs, you should consider style, scale and the purpose of the rug. Will it be placed under a round dining table? Then a round area rug is naturally a smart choice. Will it cover a large stretch of wood flooring in your living room? Perhaps choosing a large area rug or smaller accent rug topped with an accent table will do the trick. For living room area rugs, the typical size is a 8x10 area rug. The same could be said for bedroom area rugs; shop for an 8x10 area rug or larger if you are looking for a rug to place beneath a bed. Alternatively, a 5x7 area rug might be a better choice for you if you're simply looking for an accent rug.

Rug Maintenance and Construction

When you're shopping for a unique rug, your lifestyle will really drive your purchasing decision. Traffic patterns, seating arrangements and rug construction should all be taken into account. For high traffic areas, darker colors and coarse materials won't show dirt as easily and will hold up better against the rigors of heavy foot traffic. Darker wool area rugs are just one option for such spaces. Also consider whether the rug you've selected is machine washable or if it even needs to be for your specific placement. If you will be unable to wash your rug, other maintenance elements to consider for longevity include water-, fade-, and stain-resistant materials. These are often made with colorfast dyes – a term for characterizing a material's resistance to color fading and running. This level of product detail will be included in the product specs where applicable.
